Kindergarten

Our basic philosophy of an open learning environment underlines the full-day Kindergarten Program and provides a highly flexible and child-centered learning situation. In small groups, the children are free to explore, examine, and experience at their own rate of interest and growth, all under the guidance of concerned, skilled, and involved teachers.

Curriculum

Suburban Hills School’s Kindergarten Program is recognized by the State of New Jersey and our teachers are also state-certified for the program.

During the first few months of the school year, the children are tested for reading and math-readiness skills and general knowledge. The test results identify the child’s strengths and weaknesses and enable the teachers to give the children individualized attention and encouragement as needed. Year-round testing is also administered and forwarded to your child’s receiving school district.

Our Kindergarten Program is a strong, academic combination of reading, math, science, writing, and social studies. Art, free play, computers, creative expression, and music are also integrated on a daily basis. The children learn fundamental strategies and skills that will enable them to read and write independently. Students learn these skills through phonetic awareness, letter names, sound-letter correspondence, decoding, high-frequency vocabulary, and comprehension.

Social skills are stressed in our program. The building of self-confidence, the use of good manners, and the development of friendships and relationships are essential to a child’s social development.

Children are impressively prepared for first grade after the completion of our Suburban Hills’ Kindergarten Program.
